Let’s take a look at who to target on your Week 2 Waiver Wire. In general, these players will be injury replacements or those who I think have a chance to break out. Remember, it’s unlikely that someone here will be the next fantasy great, but you should find some low-end RB2s, WR3s, and bye week starters with upside potential. Any players listed will be less than 50 percent owned according to fantasypros.com consensus roster percentage.
Week 2 Waiver Wire- Quarterbacks Targets
Aaron Rodgers, Steelers (13.7% Rostered) | 4%-6% FAAB
People love to hate on him, but the bottom line is that Aaron Rodgers was the QB15 last year, despite a couple of horrible weeks. He was the QB7 this week, and I expect he’ll continually vie for being a top 12 QB. He may be on his way out after this year, but he still can produce at a top level. He is a great QB2 who will produce QB1 weeks.
Caleb Williams, Bears (73.1% Rostered) | 20%-30% FAAB
For those of you in shallower leagues, Caleb Williams is a great target. He was QB9 this week and should continue to improve as he gets more experience in Ben Johnson’s offense. With his rushing ability, expect him to have a solid floor every week with QB1 upside.
Michael Penix, Jr., Falcons (29.3% Rostered) | 2%-4% FAAB
Michael Penix, Jr., is an interesting case. He’s not really a rookie, but after only three end-of-season starts last year, he almost is. He was QB10 this week and looked good on Sunday. NFL teams have limited tape on him, so expect him to have a decent floor with some spike weeks continually. He is a great bench QB with upside in a 1-quarterback league and could easily end up as a top 12 quarterback from week to week.
Week 2 Waiver Wire- Running Backs
Dylan Sampson, Browns (43.4% Rostered) | 2%-4% FAAB
I suppose Dylan Sampson is not on over half of the teams because of Quinshon Judkins, who signed late last week. Sampson looked good in his first game Sunday, especially in the passing game with eight receptions for sixty-four yards. Judkins may be available cuts into his workload, but, considering he out-touched Jerome Ford, I think that Sampson will continue to be a factor even when Judson is available. Dylan Sampson is definitely worth a stash.
Also consider picking up handcuffs like Trey Benson (48.3% rostered), Kendre Miller (48% rostered), and D.J. Giddens (5.3%) if you have the roster space. Neither is startable right now, but both looked good in limited touches this weekend and are behind older running backs.
One thing to be cautious about is giving up on players too soon. Players like Tony Pollard, D’Andre Swift, and Tyrone Tracy all played well over 50% of the snaps, but game script and their opposing defenses limited their success in Week 1. But that trend will not continue.
Week 2 Waiver Wire- Wide Receivers
Quentin Johnson (9% rostered) and Keenan Allen (62.1% rostered), Chargers | 1%-3% FAAB for Johnston; 7%-10% for Allen
The Chargers’ offense looked good on Friday versus a stout Chiefs’ defense. Quentin Johnston and Keenan Allen were both top 12 receivers this week. While I do not expect that to be a weekly occurrence, both are WR3s with upside. Two years ago, Johnston was a first-round pick. He has had some growing pains, but has slowly started catching the ball more. He had four top 24 weeks last season, including three top 12, and already has a top two this year. Allen has reunited with the quarterback who helped him finish as a WR1 twice.
Tre Tucker, Raiders (1.8% Rostered) | 1%-3% FAAB
Tre Tucker played 90% of the snaps on Sunday. Considerably more than every Raiders’ receiver except Jakobi Meyers. He will continue to receive targets and is worth stashing as he develops a rapport with Geno Smith.
Cedric Tillman, Browns (34.9% Rostered) | 7-9%
Cedric Tillman is the clear number two receiver in Cleveland. No receiver had more targets this week, and only Jerry Jeudy equaled his snap share. Tillman showed last year that he had potential with three top-12 weeks, and that will continue this year as long as the quarterback can get him the ball. Be cautious, though, if Joe Flacco loses his job to one of their rookies.
Week 2 Waiver Wire- Tight Ends
Juwan Johnson, Saints (3.7% Rostered) | $1-3
Juwan Johnson is the only decent, healthy tight end in New Orleans, and he led the team in receptions and yards this week. Last year, even with Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau, he had three top 12 weeks. With Chris Olave in and out of the game all the time and an inexperienced quarterback, expect Johnson to continue to have plenty of opportunities.
Zach Ertz, Commanders (46.7% Rostered) | $1-3
Zach Ertz, when healthy, is continually a top 12 tight end. Jayden Daniels likes to target him, and he delivers. He had nine top 12 weeks last year and picked up where he left off this season. Ertz is not a top tight end, but with injuries to George Kittle and Evan Engram, he is worth a pick-up if you need a tight end.
